Reasons for a Root Canal

A root canal may sound frightening but in all honesty, the pain that a patient may experience before the procedure is much more terrifying. Millions of teeth are treated and saved each year with endodontic, or root canal treatment. If the pulp inside your tooth has become inflamed or infected, our doctors at Chapel Street Dental can remove it and revitalize the tooth with a root canal.

Inflammation of a tooth’s pulp can have many causes, such as deep decay, a crack or chip in the tooth, or from sensitivity caused by repeated dental procedures. A root canal can be performed in one or two visits and involves our doctor removing the infected pulp. Once the tooth is cleaned, it will be sealed and fitted with a temporary dental crown. You will wear this crown until the permanent one is ready to be placed.

Prophylaxis – Teeth Cleaning

You should visit our doctors at Chapel Street Dental twice a year for a professional cleaning to keep your oral health in optimal shape. Preventive dental appointments such as these protect teeth from periodontal disease, tooth decay, and possible tooth loss. Dental cleanings are professional called “prophylaxis” and we’d like you to know what to expect during yours.

According to the Academy of General Dentistry, it is recommended that a dentist or hygienist perform a dental cleaning every six months. The professional dental cleaning reinforces the home-care oral health regimen of brushing and flossing and gives our doctors an opportunity to locate areas in the mouth that may need special attention. During teeth cleaning, a member of our dental team will thoroughly clean the area above and below the gum line with scaling tools to rid them of plaque and tartar. Once the surfaces are smooth, polishing is done using a slow speed handpiece with a soft rubber cup that spins on the end. Last but not least, the dentist flosses every crevice between your teeth and may apply fluoride if needed.

Bridges

Bridges are a common restorative option for missing teeth.  The doctors at Chapel Street Dental restore patient’s smiles by using healthy teeth on either side of a missing tooth to anchor a permanent replacement in its place.  This is accomplished by using caps on the teeth on either side.  A bridge restores function to the mouth and blends naturally into a patient’s smile.

A permanent bridge can usually be completed in two appointments.  First, the teeth on either side of the gap may be contoured in order to make sure the bridge will fit perfectly.  Then impressions of the mouth are taken and sent to a dental laboratory where the custom product is made.  We can provide a temporary bridge to wear while the permanent restoration is being fabricated. On a second visit, the bridge will be cemented into place.  Bridges can be replaced if needed, but with proper care bridges can last a lifetime.

Fillings

The doctors at Chapel Street Dental apply fillings for patients of all ages to restore damaged teeth and create beautiful smiles.  Receiving a filling is a standard and non-invasive procedure that is typically completed in a short appointment with local anesthetic.  To fill a cavity, the area is numbed before a dentist removes any decay from the affected tooth.  The tooth is then thoroughly cleaned and prepared for the filling material.

Amalgam fillings are made from a mixture of metals that bond together to create a hard, strong filling for a compromised tooth.  Amalgam fillings are a very durable option, and some patients choose to use metal fillings on their back teeth.  Composite fillings perform the same task as metal fillings, and are more aesthetically matched to the look of your natural teeth.  These fillings are typically used on front teeth and surface cavities.  Once the material is placed, it is trimmed and polished to blend right into a patient’s natural smile.
